LIFE AND DEATH IN LAS VEGAS - THE ART OF THE SKULL

Las Vegas, Nev. (February 11, 2011) - Viewed as a metaphor for life and death, or a symbol of vanity, the skull has become a fixture in contemporary fine art. Celebrating the skull is a new exhibition by the same name – Skull – which opens Thursday, March 3, at Blackbird Studios in Las Vegas.
More than 20 artists were invited to participate in the exhibition, the curatorial premiere of Las Vegas-based artist Chris Bauder. Artists have created work in the various mediums including drawing, painting, print-making, photo, ceramic, and sculpture.
“I put together this group of artists who I felt would best represent the “skull” in a diverse and intriguing way,” said Chris Bauder, artist and show curator. “I hope for this show to give Las Vegas a fresh perspective on the “theme show” genre.”
“This show will be extraordinary,” continues Bauder. “For many of the artists, the skull has been a part of their work in some form or another. For some it has been a tangible and permanent fixture throughout their lives - from painting and tattooing, hunting, killing, collecting and photographing. For others it has been a reference to folklore, religion, science and science-fiction, medicine, erotica or taboo. This show gives each artist the chance to fully explore the one central theme.”
Participating artists in The Skull are: Chris Bauder, J.W. Caldwell, Evan Dent, Daryl DePry, Nick Geankoplis, Eric “Eno” Kuiken, Gustavo Martinez, Mike McCollum, Mike Ogilvie, James Pink, Eric Pawloski, Max Rain, Miguel Rodriguez, Sean Russell, Michael Sarich, Aaron Sheppard, Joseph Shores, Jesse Carson Smigel, Lance Smith, Rachel Sparrow, Gabe Toci and Chris Tsouras.
“Skull” will be showing Thursday, March 3 through March 25, 2011 at Blackbird Studios on 1551 S. Commerce Street, Las Vegas, NV 89102.
